6381Y Cable
What is 6381Y Cable?
6381Y Cable is a power cable suited to applications where flexibility is important. With its class 5 plain copper conductors, 6381Y Cable sits apart from other more rigid power cables such as Steel Wire Armoured (SWA) and 11KV Cable (with class 2 stranded conductors).
This PVC flexible cable — that meets the requirements of BS6004 — is a single core, unarmoured cable with PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) insulation and a flame retardant PVC sheath. It is used for DC power supply on telecom equipment and can be clipped directly to walls or used on a cable tray — armoured power cables with mechanical protection are required for direct burial.
How is 6381Y Cable constructed?
| 1 | Conductor | Class 5 flexible plain copper conductors to BS EN 60228:2005 (previously BS6360) |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Insulation | PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) Type TI1 to BS7655 |
| 3 | Sheath | PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) Type TM1 to BS7655 with oxygen index > 30% Flame retardant to BS4066 Part 1 Meets requirements for flammability as required by BT specification M231 |
What is BS6004?
BS6004 is a British Standard. It specifies the requirements for the construction, dimensions and mechanical and electrical properties of non-armoured PVC insulated cables, for operation at voltages up to and including 450V AC to earth and 750V AC between conductors — intended for electrical power, lighting and internal wiring.
By what other names is 6381Y Cable known?
6381Y Cable is also referred to as DC Telecom Cable, Power Cable, PVC Flex, and DC Power Cable.
Which industries use 6381Y Cable?
6381Y Cable is commonly found in the communication and telecoms industry, transmission, distribution and power networks and in building and construction. The flame retardant sheath on this power cable meets the flammability requirements of British Telecom specification M231 — making it suitable for BT installations. A majority of 6381Y installations involve telecom equipment at telephone exchanges.
In what colours is 6381Y Cable available?
6381Y Cable comes in a whole range of colours including Blue sheath, (Blue insulation); Grey, (Grey); Green/Yellow, (Green/Yellow); and Brown, (Brown). Special colours are made to order.
When would I need to use 6381 LS0H Cable?
6381 LS0H Cable is the low smoke zero halogen version of 6381Y Cable – specified for use in public buildings. When exposed to fire, the low smoke sheath on the 6381 LS0H Cable emits very low levels of smoke and non-toxic levels of halogen gas (typically under 0.5% HCl emission).
